CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

FEB 18TH, 2247

The Imperial Suite, Holden Crater, Mars

“What’s going on with the New Luddites now?” I asked at breakfast.

We’d gone out early, despite it being the first day of what would have been our honeymoon, to meet my mother. Thankfully, she didn’t ask about our night and nor did Bandit or Mercie, although I’m sure they were going to start asking for details as soon as they had me alone. Was she as good as us? Do you love us more? Does she have a big sex drive? At least they weren’t teasing me in front of my mother.

“Who cares about that? Did you two have a good wedding night?” Mercie said.

“Did he satisfy you, Sophia?” Bandit said.

“Did he make you do that thing he likes?” Mercie said, pinching her nose as if I had some awful fetish.

Sophia burst out laughing. “I know, right? Such a dirty boy. I suppose that’s what happens when you’re raised by a single dad. We’ll have to train him out of that.”

I cleared my throat. “There’s nothing wrong with having a thing for latex nuns and baby oil, and thank you for indulging me,” I said. Two could play at that game. Sophia blushed and shook her head at my mother, as I patted her hand. “No need to deny it, my dear. Mother won’t judge you for it.”

My mother rolled her eyes at the teasing, thankfully. At least she wasn’t the type to believe any of it was real.

Mercie smirked and Sophia punched me on the arm, something I was realizing she enjoyed doing. I was going to have to start wearing padded sleeves if they all took it up.

“The New Luddites are growing bolder, and their attack on you all hasn’t destroyed their public support in the way we hoped it would. Morons continue to flock to their cause,” Queen Teli said.

“Do you think they are gaining support?” Bandit said.

“They are, and that’s a problem. They’re whipping up anti-AI sentiment, my dear and of course you are the focus of their hatred. They and their allies are calling for you to be locked away or executed.”

“Gee, mom, don’t sugar coat it.”

“I’m sure Bandit doesn’t want me to.”

“I do not. I need to know who our enemies are.”

“Can we destroy them?” asked Mercie.

“If we knew who they are,” Sophia said. “They’re only a threat at all because they’re anonymous.”

“We can’t just round them up and shoot them though,” I said.

“That would not be advisable, no,” my mother agreed.

“No, I meant, because we don’t know who they are. We could destroy them if we did. Do we really have time to be nice and polite about it, if we work out who their leader is or where they can be found?” I asked.

“We need to win the hearts and minds of the public, still,” Mercie said. “Much though I’d like to eliminate the NLA like the vermin they are.”

“That means winning the approval of the people on any level we can,” Bandit said.
